Visiting Malabrigo Yarns workshop

My mother invited me to join her on a trip to South America, to meet my sister there and explore our familial routes in Uruguay and Argentina. I accepted, posing one condition: when we visit Montevideo, we must go visit Malabrigo’s workshop, and both my sister and my mother had no objections.

I contacted Antonio at Malabrigo, and he was very friendly and said they would be happy to have us over for a visit. We knew we were going to have a rented car, so it wouldn’t be a problem, but little did we know about the location of the workshop in Montevideo itself, which turned out to be one of the not-so-good quarters of the city, as phrased by our close local friend who was shocked we wanted to visit that area.

We managed to find the place, though with not so few turnabouts, but it just added to the thrill. The fact that our phone battery was giving us problems and we couldn’t get Antonio on the phone only added to the edge. When we got there, he sent somebody to lead us up and we breathed a healthy sigh of relief when we were safely at our destination.

It didn’t take us long to recover, and Antonio showed us around, allowing us to take photos of everything but the dyeing area, and we were thrilled – it’s so beautiful, to see all the yarn being dyed, dried, being packed and stacked in colourful bags.

But the best part was yet to arrive: the possibility to buy off-lot dyed malabrigo yarn, which was for me much better than any visit to a confectionery shop to any child in history. We took about 5 Kg. (!) of yarn with us that day.

But even with all that, our Malabrigo saga wasn’t over. On our way back I remembered that I forgot to take with me the hand made spindle I brought as a gift, and we decided to come back when we returned to Montevideo, on our way to take the ferry from Colonia de Sacramento to Buenos Aires.

When we visited the workshop again, we left with “only” 2.5 kg more, plus a special gift from Antonio and the rest, a skein of yarn made with the best merino wool, from the contest they hold between their wool providers, dyed in delicate purple tones. It’s the softest yarn I ever held in my hands, and I just don’t know what I would make of such a fine yarn, but I’m sure I could think of something, eventually. For the time being, it will remain as a glorious skein, to be petted and admired constantly.

Here are some photos from our visit, which for me was one of the memorable events of my entire visit; it was most certainly the only occasion in which I spent substantial sums, but then again, those are my “souvenirs”, no?

Lacy cardigan for my sis

My sister is away, travelling in central America, which may disturb my mother but is great for me, leaving me with plenty of time to finish her birthday present, which was due over a month ago.

I made her a lacy cardigan, volunteering to test knit a pattern for that purpose. I like test knitting, but sometimes it can be tiresome. I managed to knit it to my liking, eventually, but taking a lot of freedom in certain places where the instructions were not clear enough. Here are some pictures of the cardigan, blocked and ready to be sewn:

For this cardigan I used this yarn held double; more information about this project in its Ravelry page.

Figs, figs and some more figs

The benefit of having a relative living in a rural, agricultural area is that you have access to plenty of fresh produce in season. The downside of that same benefit is that it usually comes in such great quantities, that one’s entire family cannot consume on its own.

Fig madness

So again, we’re making some liqueur and jam:

The jam is delicious, but we’ll have to wait a while to taste the liqueur, at least 2-3 months, but it smells great already.

First dyeing experiments

I bought some Greener Shades dyes from my friend Galia who sells them through her ArtFire shop and started experimenting with some yarn skeins I had lying around and even though of destashing because I didn’t like their colour, as well as some wool roving I got from another S&B friend.

I decided to try different combinations of purples and blues, and here are the fruits of my first dyeing batch:

I’m quite happy with the results, but I want to get a better, more uniform base so I could get more homogeneous results.

My first Phat Fiber box!

After my friend Galia told me about Phat Fiber sampler box, I knew I had to try them out at least once. She also mentioned that they’re hard to get, so I thought I’d give it a try, and if I manage to snare one, good, and if not, it’s not like I have nothing to do really…

So I tried, and managed to get one on my first trial. It took it a while to get here, but here it is, in all its glory. I really like some of the spinning fibre, and might order from the sellers that made them, once I clear out some of my spinning fibre stash.

S&B picnic

Just a few photos from the picnic our local S&B group had in one of the nicest parks in Tel Aviv earlier today, taking advantage of a nice and not-too-hot Friday morning…

Cherry madness

Not precisely fibre related, but still a big project: we have picked some 50 kilos of cherries from my the trees in my man’s childhood home, where his mother still lives.

Cherries, and plenty of them

Of course we couldn’t eat them all, even when we shared (and we shared a lot), so we decided to make an some liqueur, jam and preserves.

Cherries, and plenty of them

My mother came to help and so did a friend who writes a cooking blog, and we made together two more cakes as well.

Cherries, and plenty of them

I hope this liqueur comes out nicely, but one thing is sure – it will have a gorgeous colour!

Natural Carbon

I didn’t mention it at all, but I’ve had a big project on my needles for a good bit of time, but somehow never got to take a good picture of it so I didn’t feel like writing about it.

Natural Carbon

I started knitting a Coraline cardigan, using some unmarked 100% alpaca yarn I bought last year in All You Knit is Love, when I was on my way to Backnang for the First German Ravelry meeting a few weeks ago. I had a little trouble with the cast on, as this was the first time I tried a provisional cast on with a doubled hem, but I’m quite happy with the result, as it gives some extra body to the hem.

Natural Carbon-1

I took this project with me to Berlin, as well as my Poisonous Ishbel, which I took so I could take with me to knit, so I would have something extra to knit in the evenings. I advanced quite a lot on the trip, and then finishing the yoke didn’t take too long.

Natural Carbon-4

I had to add some extra rows and change the yoke raglan decreases as my gauge wasn’t exactly right, but it came out rather nicely, even if too tight around the neck; I think I’ll just leave the cardigan button-less and wear it open, although I find some really nice hand made ceramic buttons for it in the nicer local yarn shop.

Natural Carbon-3

Project is raveled here.

More yarn

I ordered last week some yarn from Eat.Sleep.Knit and was surprised when I got so quickly. I decided it would be wise to make myself another sweater because I suspect it’s going to be quite cold here, and I prefer to have as many warm garments as possible.

I ordered 4 skeins of Dream in Colour Classy in Romeo Blue colourway…

of course my cat had to inspect them…

and when he approved, decided they would make an excellent pillow for him.

I think this yarn will make an excellent garter yoke cardigan, don’t you?

BB socks

I forgot to mention when I wrote about my visit to the Benediktbeuren textile market the knitting project that I took with me. As expected, I couldn’t spend a weekend among other knitters, in a textile fair, without knitting myself, could I?

I didn’t want to take something too big, so I just took some malabrigo sock yarn planning to knit a pair of socks for myself; since I didn’t find any sock pattern that I liked, I improvised as I knit to create the socks as I wanted them, with a mirrored lace pattern and some increases at the beginning of the heel so I would have enough room for it.

I’m really happy with the result, as the socks are very comfortable and not just pretty. I might regret making them so short when I face the chill of winter, but I wanted to leave myself enough to knit another pair of socks…

Project is raveled here.
